Thirty years ago, Medellín was broken by fear and violence. The city had the world’s highest homicide rate and was written off by the world as a lost cause. The Mayor of New York stated “The only solution to save Medellín is to bomb it and start from zero.”
And yet… from the ashes, something extraordinary happened. In 2004, a mathematician named Sergio Fajardo stepped into office as Mayor of Medellín (2004–2007) and set out to rewrite its story.
Fajardo didn’t rely on politics or power – he relied on people. He believed that education, culture, and beauty could heal violence and restore dignity. His administration built world-class libraries in the poorest neighborhoods, schools that sparked opportunity, and public spaces that brought citizens together.
Fajardo’s leadership became a catalyst that set Medellín on a new course toward innovation, inclusion, and pride. By the time his term ended, Medellín had begun one of the most celebrated urban transformations in the world – a legacy that still shapes the city today.
Join us on this incredible immersion and meet Sergio Fajardo and his team in person to learn how his leadership lit the spark that turned Medellín from a symbol of fear into a beacon of hope for the world.
LEARN HOW THE FORCES BEHIND MEDELLIN’S TRANSFORMATION WERE UNITED TOGETHER.

It’s probably the most beautiful trip I’ve taken in many years.

Journalist, owner of RepublicaSergio Fajardo’s journey is a powerful story of vision, integrity, and collaboration. A mathematician turned public leader, he stepped into Medellín’s political landscape at a time when the city was struggling with deep inequality, violence, and mistrust.
Sergio didn’t save Medellín with power or politics. He did it with people, education, and the audacity to believe beauty could heal violence. Now you can meet him and ask him how.
As mayor from 2004 to 2007, Fajardo united diverse forces community activists, educators, architects, urban planners, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders around a shared mission: to rebuild Medellín through inclusion, transparency, and education. Rather than impose top-down policies, he empowered citizens to become co-creators of their city’s renewal, investing in public libraries, parks, schools, and transit systems that reconnected marginalized communities and restored pride in public space.
The impact was extraordinary. Medellín’s homicide rate fell dramatically, community participation flourished, and the city became an international model for social innovation and urban transformation. As Governor of Antioquia, Fajardo extended this collaborative approach, fostering partnerships between public institutions, academia, and local businesses to strengthen education, transparency, and sustainable development across the region.
Sergio Fajardo will spend a whole day with us reflecting on the values that transformed Medellín: collective action, ethical governance, and belief in the power of education to drive change. Fajardo’s story stands as an invitation to leaders everywhere to imagine what is possible when courage, collaboration, and community come together to change the future.
The Mayor of New York said the only solution was to bomb Medellín and start from zero.
Instead, a mathematician became mayor and built libraries in the most dangerous neighborhoods.
The city the world gave up on became the city the world now studies.
Sergio Fajardo didn’t save Medellín with power or politics. He did it with people, education, and the audacity to believe beauty could heal violence.
Now you can meet him and ask him how.
How do you connect a community that has every reason to fall apart?
LEARN HOW THE FORCES BEHIND MEDELLIN’S TRANSFORMATION
WERE UNITED TOGETHER.
Game-changers. Bridge-Builders. Future-Makers.
Meet the Mavericks Shaping the Next Era of Leadership.

Medellín’s transformation was never the work of one person alone. It was the result of a city coming together around a shared dream. Under Sergio Fajardo’s visionary leadership, people from every corner of society found a common purpose: to rebuild trust, dignity, and opportunity through collaboration. Architects, educators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders all played their part in reimagining what their city could become, and together, they changed the story of Medellín forever.
Reimagined Medellín’s skyline and streetscapes as tools for healing. Through bold, human-centered design, they turned forgotten spaces into symbols of dignity and hope — the essence of social urbanism.
Became the heartbeat of change. Grassroots voices joined forces to co-create projects that transformed marginalized neighborhoods into vibrant, self-led communities.
Opened their doors to innovation. Professors, students, and researchers partnered with city leaders, using data and creativity to craft policies rooted in knowledge and integrity.
Sparked civic pride through art, music, and storytelling. Their cultural programs empowered youth, strengthened identity, and united communities through shared expression.
Redefined what public service could mean. By reinvesting profits from utilities into education, housing, and infrastructure, they turned enterprise into a driver of equality and opportunity.
Brought momentum and resources to the movement. Visionary businesses joined public–private alliances that generated jobs, innovation, and lasting impact.
Shifted from enforcement to engagement. They combined social programs with trust-based policing, helping citizens feel protected – not policed.
Became ambassadors of Medellín’s rebirth. They shared the city’s model with the world and helped channel global investment to sustain its growth.
Planted the seeds of renewal. From Library Parks to the restored Botanical Garden, these spaces became living symbols of Medellín’s rebirth – where learning, nature, and community meet.
